I know I have neglected this blog for a while. I have been busy graduating that I have not:

1. Finished reading any books/novels.
2. Gone to the movies. [Shocking I know... but true nonetheless]
I cant believe I havent watched Pirates... but at this point.... I dont even care anymore.

Anyway, someone got me this CD [Hey Dakota]... coz they know my addiction for this song. And can I say, that CD was surprisingly not bad. Honestly, i started listening to it with reservations but can I say, I was pleasantly surprised.
Granted, I dont think its worth 15 bucks.... but its not bad.

As I mentioned in my other blog, I am trying to read some of the books that have won the pulitzer prize for fiction.
Books like Color Purple and To Kill a Mockingbird have already previously been read and I did mention before that I read Beloved [which still confuses me].

I was actually supposed to be reading Grapes of Wrath...... but as I read the description of some of the books, I decided to start with this one: Interpreter of Maladies. And BOY! Was it good.... I totally enjoyed it and immediately began telling my pals to cop it from their libraries.

Its basically nine different stories..... and when you start the first one, you don't want to stop. True Story.

So now dear readers, please enjoy.

Last night I watched Shooter.
Granted I am biased when it comes to Mark Wahlberg since he is my number 2 baby daddy after Jon B. I have a tendency to go watch his movies whether or not and despite and inspite.......

Now, back to the movie..... Mark Wahlberg plays a retired Bob Lee Swagger, a skilled marksman who left the army after some shady stuff went down in Ethiopia.

Now, some government people have come to him, saying that some anonymous tip says there will be an attempted shooting of the president and they need his help.
Shortly, he is framed for the shooting [which was not oof the president but of the Ethiopian Archbishop. The rest... is obvious... he seeks revenge... shoots people... there is alot of blood.

Damn! I love Mark Wahlberg!

That being said, I hated Danny Glover... I hated his acting, I hated how he spoke.

No! Seriously..... was Samuel L Jackson too busy making another crappy movie?? Why wasnt he used?? Maybe he was too expensive me thinks......

Anyway, its a good movie [I was tempted to say it was awesome but then again, thats just my blood boiling from there mere thought of Mark Wahlberg. *sigh*

I give it a 3.92/5

I had heard many people say that 21 Grams was an awesome movie. I just had to see it for myself and I say.... IT WAS AWESOME. Although 300 still remains my favest movie thus far [the ones I have watched] for 2007, I can say that 21 grams is a close second.

For those who are aware, this was the second movie in a trilogy with Babel being the last movie. I am yet to watch the first movie [Amores Perros].

It is the same with Babel, intertwining three different stories, three different people. As expected, the movie was not in chronoligical order much like Babel but it was easy to follow. If you have a moment and u have yet to watch it, DO SO!

This is my favest movie for 2007 so far!
It grossed 70 million dollars the first weekend.
People clapped after it ended.

The graphics, amazing.
The acting, amazing.
Quotable movie. Hot men. The abs on those men. The thighs. *swoon*

Since the story is sorta based on history, I mean, everyone should have known what happened in the end, and if you don't, just wikipedia it!

This movie comes HIGHLY recommended....

Like you did not know that I was going to watch "Black Snake Moan" on opening weekend. Ofcourse I was going to. Curiosity got the best of me. And thank God it was satisfied. I was abit iffy on whether the movie would perform especially after my disastrous affair with "Ghost Rider"

So why was she chained?
Coz she was a nympho.
Thats all the spoilers I am going to give.

Justin Timberlake's acting wasnt actually bad. I enjoyed it more than I am enjoying that wack ass video for "What goes around"

I give it a 7/10.

OH MY GOD!
Kung Fu Hustle is ri-damn-diculous and I for one, Im pissed that I never caught it earlier...... LMAO... Im still laughing. WOHOOO! I so enjoyed it. It was awesome! I think this is one of the better movies I have had the pleasure of watching on cable.... I can't tell a lie!

Book Name: The Memory Keeper's Daughter
Author: Kim Edwards

Premise:

The story is about this man [David Henry] who has to deliver his own babies. The first one, a son, is fine. The second, a girl, has Down's Syndrome. He tells the Nurse [Caroline Gill] to take the girl to a home for the mentally retarded [the book is starts in the 60s so thats what it is called in the book]. Caroline keeps the kids, brings her up and the book is just about the two different families and how this decision affects them.

AWESOME BOOK. It is such a page turner.... I totally loved it. Best book I have red in 2007. Granted I have read maybe only 5 books but it is so far THE BEST! Get it, read it and see if you dont agree with me!

Lack of Sleep

I couldnt sleep last night and as I was channel surfing, I decided to catch "The Horse Whisperer".
Run Time: 170 minutes

The last time I watched this movie was a long time ago so there was so much I did not catch the first time I watched it. Like the fact that Scarlett Johansson was in the movie, or Kate Bosworth. And may I please point out that Scarlett has really blossomed [that video with Justin sucks though].

Anyway, the movie was very bland, unnecessarily long and the book was much better. It did help me sleep though so for that, I give it 5/10. Ok... I am being very generous. 4.5/10

Unless you want to watch poor acting by Nicolas Cage, a less than sub-par love story, a poorly written script.... STAY AWAY.

I give it 2/10. Just coz Eva Mendes is hot and I can appreciate that.

In retrospect, if the movie was written better and they chucked Nicolas Cage and used the guy who acted in The Punisher, it would have been a decent movie.

Confession: I always felt that Grey's Anatomy would one day become as dry as ER became.... but at this moment, I have high hopes for it....... VERY HIGH.

5 Reasons why Jennifer Hudson should not win the Oscar for Best-Supporting Actress

I have not yet watched Dreamgirls. I have caught clips of it on You Tube and it is nothing I would want to watch. Not in a bad way. I am not hating on Jennifer Hudson. I think the girl can sing. But act? That's stretching it abit too much.

1. Her role as Effie other than the singing, is the jilted woman. Now, I know everyone will agree with me when I say that no one and I repeat NO ONE can play jilted like Angela Bassett in Waiting to Exhale [she was so robbed] so there is nothing new we are seeing here and frankly, from what I have seen, I have not been impressed.

2. Yes, we know she is a breakout actress yada yada.... and if we are talking about breakout stars, did you catch Rinko Kikuchi's performance on Babel as the deaf girl? If I was asked, they are robbing her of the Oscar.

3. History has proven that winning an Oscar does not guarantee you big roles, good roles or even any roles. I fear that all the roles that will be sent to Ms. Hudson will be of the feisty "big" girl. [Someone say typecasting?]

4. Her music career? Thats what everyone wants to know. Will home girl come out with a CD? Is she setting her sights on that [a la Jamie Foxx?] Will it turn out to be a one hit CD [again, a la Jamie Foxx, coz we all know ain't nobody going to buy another Jamie Foxx CD]

5. Outside of a musical, I dont think she can act. And how many times do they make movies into musicals or musical movies or whatever? And how many times are those musicals featuring black people?

In other news, shoot me and poke me with a stick but there is no way in this day and age I will watch Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls.

Sci-Fi/ Fantasy Movie

So, Msanii suggested that I check out this movie. And I did this past weekend. It was a good movie. Well done. A bit too graphic for me [I closed my eyes a couple of times] but the story was brilliant. It was really a good movie. I dont think its for everyone but I do believe it is worth watching most definitely!

Its about this girl [Ofelia] who with her mum[who is pregant] moves to the countryside to be with her mum's new husband [Captain Vidal] is trying to get rid of the rebels who live in the forest. The movie moves from how Ofelia spends her day to the evil that is Captain Vidal and all that good stuff. The ending...... *tear*

PS: I could really have done without seeing the gunshot to the eye. Or the stitching of the mouth. Or the sawing off of the leg. [Those who have watched the movie know what I am talking about]

I give it an 8.5 out of 10

A Worthy Movie

I am in the process of cancelling my Netflix because school has started [Last semester]. I have like only 3 movies left on my queue then I am DONE until the summer.

Last night, I watched Transamerica and can I say that it was a good movie and I see why it received all the attention that it did. I mean, Felicity Huffman [Of Desperate Housewives fame] really outdid herself. Truth be told, I am always wary of some of the movies that are nominated for Oscars. Take a look at Million Dollar Baby. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. Worthy of all the hype and accolades? I think not. But it was a good movie. Maybe just OK.

So when I put Transamerica on my queue, it was more to satisfy my curiosity and can I just say that by the time I lay my head down to sleep, I was more that satisfied. Suffice to say, it is not for everyone [I could have done without the whole son kissing his transsexual dad thing] but the acting and the emotion and the story behind it is worth the 1 hour and 43 minutes I spent watching it.

I give it an 8 out of 10

There is no amount of coaxing that can make me watch the above named movie. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against musicals. Quite the contrary, I am a fan of Sound of Music, Chicago, Hair Spray et al. I just wish I watched Dreamgirls on Broadway and not as an over the top done movie [ I have seen some clips on Youtube].

I am constantly amused at how they are using Beyoncé to market the movie...... but she is not getting any slack from people. Most, if not all people say her acting is horrendous.... which doesnt surprise me. One word: Goldmember. Case closed.

I have nothing against Beyoncé. I just think she is too much and everywhere. Its like they are forcing her down our throats. ENOUGH ALREADY!

To whoever it is who left a comment on some blog.. it might even have been this one and mentioned that Carandiru was a good movie...... This is an Ode to you. Thank you, for telling me, because I quickly added it to my netflix queue. Thank you, because for 2 hours and 25 minutes last night, I was engrossed.

However, I have to mention that I could not sleep. As soon as I closed my eyes, I had visions of blood and of goriness [is this a word]...... I woke up in sweats! HE!

But, but, but. ....... this did not take away from the awesomeness of this movie.,..... which is based on a true story by the way. If you like foreign movies [like me].... please please please..... watch this movie!

I give it a 4.9 out of 5 [Just because nothing is perfect]!!!!

Stalling

I know I have been stalling the last segment of "Have you listened to this album" but its because there are so many albums... Im getting confused.

So anyway, I was listening to 12 Inches of Snow - YES....that Snow... That album is not bad. I cant even deny. The previous Ciiku would have lengad that album but the new me, was open to whatever. And I was pleasantly surprised. First, I like the title of the album...... 12 inches of snow. There are so many ways to read that statement. I just love the double entendre

But that brings me to what I wanted to discuss today: SAMPLING!

Sometimes when I find out that a song was sampled, it loses its value to me. Especially when it is so blatant. Take True by Spandau Ballet. This song was sampled by PM Dawn in their song "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss of you" and I love this song. Lloyd came along with the song You and HATED IT!

Whats my point? Yesterday while listening to Snow's album, the first song, Runway, [This link is for the video for the song] was sampled by Necessary Noize. I don't know the name of the song but its the one where the lyrics go something like "what me have to do to keep Nazizi from rhyming?" "Me don't know". Whoever knows what I am talking about, please tell me which song it is.

So I watched Pursuit of Happyness last night. And I really need to read the book coz seriously... sometimes I think movies are abit over the top. Especially since this movie was supposed to be based/inspired on a true story.

Second, ofcourse I had to go to IMDB to read what people said, and ofcourse, there were some who were quick to bash the movie, saying that its moral was that the more money you had the happier you were.

Ofcourse, imbeciles like these ones, cant really be helped. They overlooked the relationship he had with his son, the LACK of a relationship with his wife and mother of his children, how much he had to go through for six months, not making any money, $ 21 in his account. I mean seriously people... the movie was rich! I give it a 7/10

Necessary Noize - Self Titled First Album [Could not find the album cover for the life of me.] Loved this CD. When I first listened to it, I think I played it continuously for 2 weeks.
Necessary Noize - Kenyan Boy, Kenyan Gal - Nothing short of amazing. However, all this "if I die" songs need to end.
E-Sir - Nimefika - Embodiment of a classic
Damien Marley - Welcome to Jamrock - Best album I listened to last year. Still on heavy rotation in my cd player.

Pink - Cant take me home

This was when Pink was classified as R&B or Pop before she went all Rock. Now, don't get me wrong, I like her rock but this CD is just amazing. One of my favorite songs ever sang [Stop Falling] is on this album.

Heather Headley - This is who I am

Man! oh! Man! Where do I begin with this one? First, one of my wedding songs is in this album [If it wasn't for your love]Second, this song can take you to a calm place. A nice place. A relaxing album. Loves it!

Joe - All that I am

Before I even begin to talk about this album, let me just say that I miss old Joe. Pure RanB Joe. All this nonsense about adding rap to his music needs to stop {End of rant}

I can say without a doubt that Leonardo Di Caprio is one of the most prolific and simply one of the best actors in Hollywood in this day and time.

Before anyone starts preaching to me about child soldiers and workers and the effect of Blood Diamonds in Sierra Leone, please note that in this here post, I am discussing the movie and not the moral/issue behind it. Thankyou!

Back to Di Caprio........... He is really brilliant. I say this having just watched Blood Diamond this past weekend. Granted, his attempt at an Afrikaans accent was a tad bit not-so-good but the acting my peoples! That acting was ON POINT!

Djimon Hounsou??? ..... "I AM HIS FATHER, HE IS MY SON".... Damn! I had goosebumps.

OK the movie was a tad bit gory but seriously...... It was a good movie.. I cant even deny, especially since I had sworn to not watch it. [In my defense, Im just tired of this whole Africa-is-in-trouble-lets-make-a-movie-about-it-and-milk-it-for-what-its-worth mentality].
On Saturday as I was in the mall and passed by some "diamond" stores... I started shouting, BLOOD DIAMONDS. Suffice to say, people thought I was mad!
I like when he said "You Americans like to talk about your feelings" coz really, people like to talk about their feelings and sometimes I wish they would just SHUT UP!

When I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I thought they could not get any more ridiculous than that. Oh! Brother! I watched Monty Python's The Meaning of Life last night and realized that these people can be concluded to be clinically insane. LOL!

Seriously.... this movie is just ridiculous, nonsensical, crude, gross[the gluttonous man and the live organ donation scenes]. Sometimes you get lost and forget that you are supposed to be watching a movie that attempts to explain "The Meaning of Life." I especially like the scene where he [Cleese] is teaching the boys about sex. Its just too much.

Ah yes, the new year is here.

For me, this means that there are more movies to be watched and reviewed, more books to be read. All in all, I am optimistic about this year and the future.

For all those who are asking, I did stop blogging at Life and its General Nonsense but this blog will remain alive!!

I know I was supposed to write something about Happy Feet but the energy eludes me. Watch it though. Its not the genius that is Shrek but it had its moment and the soundtrack was HOT FIRE! I cant even deny! I want that sound track.

In the literary world, I finished reading "The Secret Life of Bees". It was just awesome. Im currently reading "Knee Deep in Wonder" to be followed by Atlas Shrugged. Always busy is me!

Oh yeah... I watched Mommie Dearest. Totally NOT believable.

I watched Deja Vu.
It was alright.
It was not mind blowing. It was not as mind boggling as The Departed. It was just .... there..... I really cant find a better word to explain it. I give it 3 stars... on a scale of one to five.

Dont get me wrong, it had its moments..... It was interesting to see Val Kilmer after a while. Also the dude who played Jesus in Passion of the Christ was actually the villain in this movie.

[I have yet to watch Passion of the Christ. I doubt I ever will]

Now I cant wait to watch Happy Feet. I keep hearing good things about it.

In other news, my Netflix account get reactivated next week on Thursday when school ends. I cant wait.
Winter is so much better spent in bed with hot chocolate and a good movie.

I don't care who you are, the first Heather Headley CD was a good CD [This is who I am]. Actually, it was better than good, it was GREAT! I love that CD.

I happened to get her latest CD "In My Mind" last evening. I am so disappointed. Really I am. The first single entitled "In my mind" also happens to be the first song in the cd and I can tell you that after that, the CD goes DOWNHILL.

I am totally saddened by that fact. She needs to do better!

The man, the mystery, the lips!

I think during the whole movie I spent it trying to figure out what it was about this man's lips that made him look so sexy. Oh and his body!!! I cant even begin to explain the body. WAH!

I could have def done without the whole Bond falling in love storyline because it was just....... I dont know how to express it but seeing Bond, James Bond crying is something I definitely could have done without.
And what about the torture scene?? Jesus! Every man in the theatre was woozy after that scene I am sure... lol.... Good Times!

Oh and when I saw him driving a FORD.... I was like.... "Oh Hell No!!!... Bond better NOT be driving a Ford"... but he did end up getting the Aston Martin.... so yeah!

Now, did Daniel Craig deliver? Most definitely. Without a shadow of a doubt! Can I say that he was better than Brosnan?? Maybe....

I might have just been tired of Brosnan and the emphasis on the "Bond Girls" and his high tech fake crap!

I refuse to rate this movie.
I think its worth watching especially if you are a Bond fan!

So I watched Babel and I thought it was a well done movie.
Many have compared it to Crash and to some extent, I agree, as far as the six degree of seperation theme was also apparent. However, Babel was different.
It spoke more indepth about communication [or lack thereof] and also perception of people that we have just on seeing them.
Something unique about Babel is that, if you dont keep track of the timing, you can get somewhat lost in the story line.

I dont know how I can do the review of the movie and not give away the whole of it but I was reading reviews on Yahoo and IMDB and I realized why movies such as White Chicks get to be made.

Many people have said that the movie made no sense to them and that it was disgusting [probably due to some sexual overtones], some have said that it is the worst movie ever. To me, this translates to the fact that people have stopped thinking. People would rather go to the movies, be mildly amused by some over the top comedy and go home. Watch some fake romantic comedy, and go home with a warm heart in the hope that love will pay the bills.

Pffttt..... [roll eyes].....

I know that movies are supposed to make us go into this other "fantasy" world where the roses dont have thorns and everything is peachy but newsflash people..... Thats not how life is.

So in short, if you would rather be delusional, watch Santa Clause 3.
For some dose of reality, watch Babel!

If your heart is all weak and you get pissed off easily and the highlight of your life is to get offended easily, then just stay at home. PLEASE. For your own sake. Coz Sacha is merciless. No one is spared. Also, apart from the Pamela Anderson scene, I dont think anything else is scripted. So pretty much everyone put their own foot in their own mouth. Ahhhh...... What a dose of fresh air. Comedy at its best. Wohoooooo! With classic lines that I will try to inject in my everyday routine conversations... lol!... Man! I cant even give away anything about the movie...... I just cant.

However, I will give away ALOT about The Departed.

I mean, I watched the movie and I was left with questions:

Was the Kid's Sullivans? Coz I dont think so. I think it was Bills
What was in the envelope Bill gave to Madolyn [or whatever her name was]
Why did Sullivan shoot his friend?
Why did Dignam shoot Sullivan?
Was Frank impotent? Was Sullivan?

Honestly, the movie is good. I mean, the cast is ofcourse exemplar. My baby daddy is on there [Mark Wahlberg]. But it was too damn long. Im sorry but it was not necessary for that movie to last two and a half hours... no matter how good it was!

I listened to his CD [The Evolution of Robin Thicke] this past weekend. It was a good CD but it brought out the question:

Why is it that all RnB artists feel that they should have a song with a rapper in the CD? And then when they do, they feature some wack ass rapper.

If I was asked, I would have given this CD 5 stars were it not for the three songs that were featuring some wack ass rapper [Lil' Wayne and Pharrell]. Actually, I take that 5 stars back. I would have given it 4 but due to Shooter and Wanna Love you Girl and the other one song that I forwarded that featured Lil Wayne, I give it a three. I love love love Lost without you. Now if they stopped giving it so much airplay ....... coz you know what happens when they give a song too much airplay. It get annoying.... Here is the video.

That being said, I also gave Omarion's 21 a listen. He featured 50 ~~pennies~~ cent in one of his songs. I refuse to listen to the CD EVER again.

We all know that they hail Dakota Fanning as the best young actor ever but sometimes I feel that she does roles that are way beyond her age. Maybe I am being too harsh and dont get me wrong, I love Dakota in I am Sam, Man on Fire et al but anywho, I digress.

I first caught a glimpse of Ms Palmer in The Wool Cap, a made for TV movie with William Macy. I loved her.

And only recently, I got to watch Akeelah and the Bee. And I would like to add it as a good movie for 2006 along with those on my list.

Room for improvement.... and please DO NOT release any more singles. Im tired!!!!

The number of times I had been told that this movie was a fvcking classic...... I cant count. All I can say is that, I made it a point to see it to see what the whole hullabaloo was about.

And I did.

And it was HILARIOUS!

I wont say that it was a CLASSIC..... but it was a well done, well acted, well scripted movie.

Definite must see.

I have so many things to review and I keep postponing my "Last King of Scotland" rant. All in good time. I think I am caught up with class enough to do it this week. But first, I have to talk about Shusic and before I even get into that, let me talk about CD Baby My shopping experience there was just too entertaining. After I bought the CD, they sent me an email:

As always, on Monday morning, I go to Yahoo! to see how the box office did. I was surprised to see that Jackass Number Two was the number one movie this past weekend. But what can I say? Hollywood is DEAD and people are working with what they have.

Anyway, in 1949 they made a movie. "All the King's Men". This movie went on to win two Oscars.
Fast Forward to 2006, they remade the movie, with an all stellar cast, Sean Penn, Anthony Hopkins, etc...... How did it do at the box office? It TANKED [much like Janet's Album will].

Do you know what some dude in Sony said?

"I'm not sure," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "It's a movie that we love and believe in, and we hoped that it would perform better."

Is he serious??
Do these people do research??
Since when has a remake ever done as well as the original especially an Oscar winner??

All these Hollywood execs need to think about something: People would rather watch a SEQUEL to nonsense and dumbness [Jackass] than watch a remake.........

The Zahir and my love for Paulo Coehlo

Ever since I read The Alchemist, I have made it a mission to read all of Paulo Coehlo's books. I read "Eleven Minutes" but it did not deliver.

As for The Zahir, I wanted to post some of the things that were said in this book but it was due at the library so I dont have the pleasure. It was such a good book. It made me cry............ just a bit. Not a lot.

Premise:

A wife leaves the husband. He spends about two years and change trying to figure out why and how and in the process grows and changes...... Oh my! My heart was so touched by this book. I cant express it in words.

I give it a 8.75/10

A overly hyped book and an otherwise intense movie

There was alot of hupla about this book [Running with Scissors - Augusten Burroughs]. After all, it took me about one month to get it from the library. Everyone said that it was an awesome book and so I was more than ready to read it. Suffice to say, it was a very very good read. The best book I have read this year remains "The Alchemist" but this is a close second, maybe third. I could have done without the graphic gay sex but all in all, the book was good. Suffice to say as well, I shall not be watching the movie because we all know that Hollywood does not do justice to good books!

Where do I begin with this movie?? [Basketball Diaries].First off, I give it 4.5/5. And yes, it was that good. Its the TRUE story of Jim Carroll, basketball player, poet and druggie. It was just too intense. LOVED IT!
I may not like Leonardo DiCaprio much but I have to say that he out did himself in this role [Granted I have yet to watch Titanic, Catch me if you Can or Aviator] but still, I was very impressed.
When you are messed up with drugs that you allow some nasty old man to blow you at the train station bathrooms......... thats just low..... the low of all lows..... Well, that and cursing your mother out... which he does..

The movie also stars Mark Wahlberg aka my future baby daddy!

My boo suggested that I watch this movie. Ladies and gentlemen, I am SHOCKED!!!! This movie shocked me seriously.....!!!! Sex was a recurring theme in the whole movie...... Sex, Sex and more sex.

Spoiler Warning!

These two boys, Tenoch and Julio, love booze, weed and whacking off. Sex is somewhere in there. I mean, they whack off together at the pool. So they go on some journey with Luisa who proceeds to sleep with both of them, but they cum within two seconds of penetration...........
In the end, Tenoch and Julio end up making out [we are not shown if indeed they have sex together] and end up not being friends after they go back home.

Things I learnt from this movie
Too much masturbating reduces your stamina. [Is this true?]
